A nearly two month-long ban imposed by Iraq on poultry import has reduced the price of eggs exported from Iran 50 percent, although the ban has recently been lifted.

"We have been experiencing almost a 50 percent decrease in the price of the export bound egg following re-opening of markets such as Iraq," ISNA quoted the head of Iran's Poultry Breeders Union, Reza Kazemi as saying on September 2.

The price of eggs exported from Iran was 70,000 rials (1$ equals 29,950 rials) per kilo before Iraq imposed the ban, however the prices was subject to a sharp decline and stood at 35,000 rials after the resumption of exports, he added.

Iraq banned poultry and egg imports from Iran on June 18, after the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) published a report on the H5N1 bird flu virus in Iran.

Two months after Iraq imposed a ban on poultry imports from Iran following reports of an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus in some farms in the country, Baghdad lifted the ban on August 10.

Iran claimed that the virus has not spread around the country and the infected farms are limited to Iran 's northern Mazandaran province.

Iran produces two million tons of poultry and 900,000 tons of eggs annually.
Iran exported about 13,000 tons of poultry and 22,000 tons of eggs in the first three months of current fiscal year (March 21-June 22).
