Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 6

By Emil Ilgar – Trend:

Iran has inaugurated the first platform of the phase 18 of the South Pars gas field on Dec.6, IRNA reported.

The platform, called "18A" produces 14 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) of gas as well as 500 tons of ethane and 20,000 barrels per day of gas condensate.

Phases 17 and 18 are the joint project. Iran is producing 30 mcm/d of gas from these fields and when the project becomes fully operational with adding the mentioned two platforms, the production capacity would reach 50 mcm/d.

Currently, the refinery of phases 17&18 processes 42 mcm/d of gas, including 12 mcm/d of gas generated at phases 6, 7 and 8 of the South Pars field.

Iran has installed 18B platforms earlier, but waits for suitable weather conditions for them to be inaugurated.

17B platform is almost complete and is expected to be transited to the field in the coming days.

Iran increased the nominal production capacity of South Pars gas field to 420 mcm/d last fiscal year (ended on March 20), and plans to add 100 mcm/d to this volume during the current fiscal year.

South Pars, the world’s biggest gas field is joint between Iran and Qatar. Iranian side consists of 18 trillion cubic meters reserves, has been divided to 24 phases and the final production of the field is expected to surpass 800 mcm/d when all of the phases become operational.

Iran produced above 700 mcm/d of gas last year, including flaring and re-injections to oil fields, to maintain the crude oil output level.

The country plans to increase this volume to about 1,000 mcm/d in the coming two years.
