Russian president to visit Turkmenistan

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov invited Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev to visit Turkmenistan any time," the Turkmen government said.

"This invitation was accepted with gratitude. The date of the visit will be agreed through diplomatic channels," the message said.

The presidents exchanged views on matters of mutual interest over phone.

The two sides expressed confidence in further successful continuation of traditional interaction, created taking into account huge potential on a strong foundation of historical, spiritual and cultural unity of the two peoples.

An agreement was reached to hold a regular meeting of the bilateral commission in October this year. The date of conducting a joint forum and exhibition, devoted to issues of cooperation in the agricultural sector, has been determined.

Rapid development dynamics has been recently observed within cooperation between Turkmenistan and the largest regions of Russia, such as Tatarstan, St. Petersburg and the Astrakhan region. Multimillion-dollar contracts to supply construction equipment, repair ships, modernization of road and transport infrastructure have been signed.

Despite the global economic crisis, there is a progressive increase in trade turnover of two countries. It exceeded $5.5 billion in 2009. However, Russian export to Turkmenistan increased by 2,5 times over the same period of the last year.

Berdimuhammedov paid a state visit to Russia in March 2009. An extensive package of important bilateral documents was signed.
