Iranian commandos saved an oil tanker from sea pirates, Fars news agency reports.

An Iranian oil tanker was traveling near the Bab-el Mandeb Strait between the Arabian Peninsula and Africa when it was attacked by six pirate vessels. Iranian commandos were able to drive the pirates away after firing on them.

Rampant piracy off the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia has made the waters the world's most dangerous.

Iran's navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard maritime trade and in particular ships and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran.
