Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian has accused the United States of following double-standard policies towards the Middle East region.

The U.S. is pursuing the same policies it Iraq as it did in Syria, Amir Abdollahian said, Iran's official IRIB news agency reported on June 19.

"The U.S. wants to go the same way in Iraq as it did in Syria without relinquishing its double-standard policies," he noted.

Amir Abdollahian added that, "the Iraqi armed forces and popular volunteers of Shiite, Kurd and Sunnis will undoubtedly put an end to the terrorism in Iraq."

The Iranian deputy foreign minister reiterated that no sane man can become companion of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in Iraq and the region.

He also noted that "those who cooperate with the terrorists do not have a correct understanding of the notion of security."

Tension in Iraq increased after the ISIL, which developed into a formidable force inside Syria has extended its reach into Iraq since June 10, gaining near-complete control of the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit and seizing Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city.

The group seized large swathes of western Iraq's Anbar Province in January, including much of Fallujah and parts of Ramadi.

Commenting on the position of the Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) in the ongoing crisis Amir Abdollahian said "the (Iraqi) Kurds have been surrounded geographically by the ISIL and they cannot ignore considering the terrorist group a serious threat."

Following the recent developments in Iraq the prime minister of the KRG Nechirvan Barzani visited Tehran on June 16 to hold consultations with Iranian officials on the security situation in the country.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani has announced that Tehran will spare no effort to protect Shiite holy cities in Iraq.

Rouhani also said on June 14 that Iran is ready to assist Iraq in the fight against "terrorists" within international law if Iraq wants it.
