Former presidential candidate Raffi Hovannisian said today that he opposes the possible membership of Armenia in the Eurasian Union, Mediamax reported.

During a press conference at the Freedom Square, Raffi Hovannisian said Armenia should see its future in the European direction.

"I am against Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Union, but that does not mean that Armenia does not need strong economic relations with Russia and Asian countries. I am not opposed to Armenia's observer status in the Union. However, I believe that Armenia must see its future in Europe, if, of course, Europe recognizes the right of Armenian citizens," the politician said.

Eurasian Union (EAU) is a proposed union of sovereign states with common political, economic, military and customs zones, intended to be establishes on the basis of the Union of Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, as well as corresponding branch-wise integration structures of the CIS - EurAsEC, CES, CSTO, and the Customs Union.
