Regional security was on the agenda when Bulgarian and Georgian defence ministers met in Sofia. The Georgian Defence Ministry said today that the topic has become one of the most important issues during the meeting between Irakli Alasania and his Bulgarian counterpart Todor Tagarev.
The sides also discussed the prospects for future cooperation in the field of military education.
According to the report, the Georgian Defence Minister informed his Bulgarian counterpart about the current and planned reforms in the defence sector of the country.
One of the main topics of the meeting was the prospect of Georgia joining NATO and EU-Georgia relations. Alasania stressed that Georgia's integration into the Euro-Atlantic organisations is a major priority of the foreign policy of the country.
Alasania stressed Bulgaria's support in the process of Georgia's integration into the Euro-Atlantic organisations, as well as the importance of the participation of Bulgarian experts in the EU Monitoring Mission.
Alasania and Tagarev held a joint press conference following the meeting.
"Bulgaria is Georgia's ally and strategic partner," Alasania said. "I would like to thank Bulgaria for its support for Georgia's territorial integrity. Our servicemen are cooperating in the Afghan mission ISAF. They trust and respect each other. We intend to continue and intensify these relations in the future."
The Georgian Defence Ministry's delegation's official visit to Bulgaria began on April 24.
