Georgian Energy Ministry has become a national coordinator of the European Union's flagship project, "Covenant of Mayors" for the exchange of international experience in the field of energy efficiency. A relevant memorandum of cooperation was signed between Georgian Energy Ministry and the European Commission.

Under the memorandum, the country's Energy Ministry will render information and consultative services in the process of preparation of a long-term strategy for municipalities that have joined the project of the European Commission.

"Covenant of Mayors", which Georgia joined in 2010, is a large-scale initiative of the European Commission. It brings together local and regional governments which voluntarily commit themselves to improve energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources in their territories.

The signatories aim to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 20 percent by 2020 and thus contribute to the development of "green economy" and improving living standards.

Currently, the project involves some 5,460 municipalities of the world, including seven cities of Georgia: Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Gori, Poti, Zugdidi and Batumi.
