U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will visit Cyprus next week to meet officials from both sides of the disputed island, AA reported.
"The vice president will emphasize the United States' strong support for a comprehensive settlement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality," a statement from the Whitehouse said on Monday.
In his visit at the invitation of the Greek administration's president Nicos Anastasiades, Biden will call on all parties on the island to intensify their efforts to restore peace in the region and will stress the role that all citizens can play in promoting understanding between two communities.
The island of Cyprus has remained divided into Greek and Turkish parts since a Greek Cypriot coup was followed by a Turkish peace mission to aid Turkish Cypriots in the north in 1974.
