Romania's Independence Day celebrated in Baku

Independence Day of Romania was celebrated in Baku on Wednesday.

The Romanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikolai Ureki welcomed the guests. "I'm happy to share with all who attend celebrating this important day for our country," said the diplomat.

On behalf of Azerbaijan, the Minister of Agriculture Ismet Abbasov congratulated the Romanian people on the Independence Day and expressed confidence in the development of friendly relations between the two countries, and thanked them for supporting the position of Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.

Romania officially recognized the independence of Azerbaijan on Dec. 11, 1991. The two countries established diplomatic relations on June 21, 1992. Azerbaijan opened in Romania its first embassy in Eastern Europe.

When Romania became a NATO member, it has been an active supporter of Azerbaijan's future membership to this organization, pointing to the strategic importance of trade and navigation. Currently, Romania supports Azerbaijan in accession to the European Union.
