The issue of lighting the torch of the European Games in the Fire Temple (Ateshgah) in Baku will be discussed when the host city of the next European Games becomes known, Azerbaijani Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov said in an interview with the newspaper Azerbaijan.

Most likely, agreement on this issue will be reached, he said.

He went on to add the suggestion that the torch of the European Games, which will be held every four years, is to be lit in the Temple Ateshgah in Baku, has been made.

"The President of the European Olympic Committees Patrick Hickey accepted this proposal with pleasure," the minister said.

Rahimov said that the opening and closing ceremonies of the first European Games were grandiose.

"Azerbaijan has demonstrated to the world its history, culture, art, tolerance, hospitality and history of the sport," he said. "The media in many countries have published detailed materials on the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games."

He said that all the projects involved in these ceremonies that foreign specialists worked at, were in the focus of the First Lady of Azerbaijan, Chairperson of the 1st European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva.

Prior to the submission of projects and ideas, these specialists for a long period of time visited Azerbaijani libraries, museums, got acquainted with the historical monuments, were listening to national music, the works of Azerbaijani composers Gara Garayev, Fikret Amirov, getting ready to work on projects, according to the minister.

All of their ideas were presented to the Chairperson of the 1st European Games Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva, who was making her additions, amendments, the minister said.

"We are confident that our people liked all the prepared scenes and show," said the minister. "Azerbaijan has demonstrated its strength, power to the world both by the opening and the closing ceremonies of the European Games."

The European Games kicked off in Baku June 12 and wrapped up on June 28. Baku 2015 First European Games hosted 20 sports - 16 Olympic and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe came to Baku to represent their nations over 17 days of competition. Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
