Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 9

By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The TASIM project will make a contribution to the development of not only the countries of Central Asia, but also the Asian region as a whole, head of the working group on TASIM project Zaur Hasanov told Trend.

He said that this will be possible thanks to Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the working group on the draft of the Asian-Pacific Information Superhighway - APIS.

The election of chairperson countries took place in South Korea within the framework of the first meeting of the Working Group on the APIS Sept.1. Following the last election, Azerbaijan (TASIM project), Korea and China were selected vice-chairmen countries of the APIS working group. Pakistan will be chairing in the working group.

"It is common knowledge that Azerbaijan has great experience in the field of ICT, skills in the construction of network infrastructure, the organization of e-services, ensuring cyber security and so on, and the TASIM project initiated by Azerbaijan will make it possible for the country to make its contribution to the development of the region," Hasanov said. "In turn, this will allow Azerbaijan to accumulate more knowledge in terms of technological development."

With regard to technological development, Hasanov said that today the Broadband (broadband data transmission technology) concept is transformed from a fixed platform to a mobile one.

"This is happening all over the world," Hasanov said. "The number of Mobile Broadband subscribers is increasing exponentially, which in turn requires the presence of DATA-centers and Internet traffic exchange points envisaged in the TASIM draft, which is in the sight of the world community."

Earlier, Azerbaijan proposed trilateral cooperation between the TASIM project, programs of the UN SPECA (Special Program for Central Asia) and CAREC (Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation).

This cooperation will contribute to the wide exchange of experience of Azerbaijan in the field of ICT with the countries of Central Asia, the broad support of the TASIM project, create the possibility of TASIM's integration with the Asian information superhighway, supported by the UNSCAP program (The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), according to the source. UNSCAP is the founder of SPECA.

At present, a new direction of cooperation proposed by Azerbaijan is under consideration.

Earlier, UNSCAP marked TASIM as a key example of regional cross-border terrestrial communication. The above statement was reflected in the conclusion and recommendations on the development of AIS and posted on the official website of UNSCAP.

The document said that the TASIM project is intended not only to connect Europe and Asia, but also to become one of the key parts of the AIS. UNSCAP and the TASIM secretariat were in favor of mutual support of the both projects and expressed their willingness to continue working together to create an information and communication space in Asia and the Pacific region.

UNSCAP invited to consider TASIM's joining the Eurasian Connectivity Alliance - EuraCA as an interested party as well, which represents the Asia-Pacific region.
