Azerbaijan and Latvia signed a protocol on the basis of agreements reached during the meeting of Commission on international relations between the representatives of the two countries' transport ministries, said a message issued Apr. 20 by Azerbaijan's Transport Ministry.

The commission's meeting was held Apr. 20 in Riga, Latvia.

The parties discussed the current state of international road transportation, current problems and prospects of development during the meeting.

Meanwhile, the increase in freight traffic through the North-South international transportation corridor, determination of a contingent of permits for 2016-2017 and other issues of mutual interest were also discussed during the meeting.

The North-South international transportation corridor is meant to connect the northern Europe with the south-eastern Asia. It will serve as a link between the railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia.

At an initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 million tons of cargo via the North-South corridor a year, and 15 to 20 million tons of cargo in the future.

The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Latvia totaled $2.04 million in 1Q2016, which is by 5.9 percent more than in the same period of 2015, according to Azerbaijan's State Customs Committee.
