International transport and logistics provider AsstrA-Associated Traffic AG has summed up the overall results of its oversized cargo transport projects.
AsstrA Heavy Lift's turnover during the first nine months of the year reached approximately 7 million euros on about 100 completed projects. The overall volume of transported cargo reached approximately 120,000 tons, with the largest single shipment amounting to 185 tons processed wholly by specialists at our Saint Petersburg office.
The single biggest project involved the transportation of concrete elements from Poland and Lithuania to Belarus in about 1,000 shipments. The largest intermodal transportation project processed by our company involved the relocation of an entire factory production line from Spain to Bulgaria in around 300 shipments.
AsstrA has been providing oversized cargo transportation services for more than 10 years. The Heavy Lift department offers a full set of logistics and transport services necessary to ship oversized cargo internationally by rail and road.
„Each project includes the requisite inspectional procedures, development of the transportation scheme, the processing of all necessary documentation, and of course the transport itself, which may consist of a number of stages. The coordination of the whole process takes an estimated 80% of project time, financial operations around 10%, while the actual heavy lift transportation the last 10%,” says Przemyslaw Boronski, Head of AsstrA Heavy Lift. “Oversized cargo projects don't follow a set pattern. Some require the removal of road signs or specialized fencing along the route. In some cases it is not possible to use specialized cranes for loading or unloading the cargo. It is very important that all of these types of issues are settled in advance.“
Today, oversized cargo transportation accounts for around 3% of the company's overall turnover. By the end of 2018, however, AsstrA plans to boost this figure to 5%. Also, the company is planning to place greater emphasis on oversized cargo transportation projects where AsstrA takes responsibility for transshipment as well as door-to-door intermodal transportation.
“Successful oversized cargo projects help raise the company’s prestige and promote its expertise in other areas. In cases when the cargo consists of production process elements, a good project can lead to anywhere between 100 to 1,000 additional shipment orders the following year,“ says Przemyslaw Boronski. “This way, in 2016 we processed about 100 shipments of oversized cargo for the production a wooden panels. And a year after the factory was opened we started shipping parts of the final product.”
