The shelling of Armenian Armed Forces has one goal - to sow fear and intimidate the local Azerbaijani population so that the people would pressure their government and demand to end this war as soon as possible, Israeli expert, lawyer, specialist in international law, and international politics Michael Finkel told Trend.

"This is their only goal and the reason why such attacks on peaceful cities have been carried out in the history of mankind, there are many examples of such actions," Finkel added.

What the Armenian armed forces are doing, firing at peaceful civilian cities of Azerbaijan and shelling them with artillery, is a direct violation of the Geneva Convention and International Humanitarian Law, which must cause condemnation, objection and indignation in all civilized countries, he says.

"The standard of warfare in the post-World War II era, according to the rules of the Geneva Convention and International Humanitarian Law, is the same for everyone. In particular, according to these laws, any civilian population must be protected," he added.

"Whatever the war is, since 1949, after the signing of the Geneva Convention, every army in the world is obliged to clearly separate the military and the civilian population, which is forbidden to strike," he explained.
