( dpa ) - A Ukrainian grandmother killed her one-year-old grandchild because he was crying so much, the Interfax news agency reported Thursday.
The 43-year-old grandmother had been drinking vodka, said a spokesman for the Zaporizhia police force in east Ukraine.
The baby's 23-year-old mother had left little boy with the grandparents in the village Novoyakovlevka. The grandfather went to sleep in an adjacent room after dinner.
The grandmother, left alone with the infant and unable to stop the baby crying, first beat the child in the head and face inflicting serious injuries, but failed to quieten the baby.
She then used the infant's own swaddling blanket to suffocate the boy, police said. Once he was dead, the woman waited for nightfall and placed the corpse on a nearby road.
The grandmother, asked by her husband the next morning what had happened to the baby, initially claimed burglars had kidnapped the infant. But the grandfather later found the dead baby on the road.
The woman confessed to killing the infant once police arrived on the scene. She faces premediated murder charges carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison.
