Another general of Turkish Armed Forces submits resignation letter

Another general of Turkish Armed Forces has submitted a resignation letter, CNN Türk TV channel reported on Dec.2.

The reason of the resignation is the trial of servicemen who are charged with the military coup of September 12, 1980.

Over 1,000 sergeants and nearly 700 officers of the Turkish Armed Forces submitted their resignation letters in Turkey within two months, Milliyet newspaper reported earlier.

It was also reported that Turkish ex-president, 94-year-old Kenan Evren, who led a military coup on September 12, 1980 in the position of the chief of the general staff, faces a life sentence. He is accused of organizing a coup.

Around 347 generals, 40,000 officers, 97,100 sergeants and 369,500 private soldiers serve in the divisions of Turkish Armed Forces.

Some 314 of the total number of generals serve in the central command, around 32 generals serve in the gendarmerie and one in the coast guard.

Around 33,500 officers and 72,900 sergeants serve in Turkey's Navy, Air Forces and Land Forces. Some 5,800 officers and 22,800 sergeants serve in Turkey's gendarmerie. Around 601 officers and 405 sergeants serve in the coast guard.
