Some 142 participants of the May Day marches, accused of provocation against the police, were arrested in Istanbul and Ankara, the Turkish newspaper Sabah reported on May 2.

Some 90 people, including 13 police officers, were injured as a result of the clashes among policemen and march participants.

Celebrating May Day in Turkey - International Workers' Day has been banned for 32 years. In April 2004 the ruling Justice and Development Party canceled a ban on holding May Day marches.
The May Day marches have been recently held in some Turkish cities.
