CIS Summit to Select a New Chairman and Executive Secretary

The CIS summit in Dushanbe, Capital of Tajikistan, on 5 October will select a new chairman instead of Nursultan Nazarbayev and will define who will change Vladimir Rushaylo, the CIS Executive Secretary.

"some of the organizing issues will be discussed. In particular, the issues regarding the location of the next CIS summit, as well as the chairmanship of CIS members' presidents in the organization," Sergey Prikhodko, the Russian President's assistant, said to journalists before the the summit.

"Chairmanship in the CIS is a very problematic issue. It will be discussed by presidents. There are different persons wishing to preside over the organization, but the matter has not been yet clarified, there are several principles followed while changing the chairman, for instance, rotation of the countries in alphabetic order," another Kremlin representative said to ITAR-TASS anonymously. According to him, appointing the next executive secretary of the organization is not less crucial. "The term of office of the current secretary (Vladimir Rushaylo) is expiring. A new secretary will probably be suggested at this summit," he said. " Russia will not nominate Vladimir Rushaylo and the former head of the Central Election Committee, Alexander Veshnakov, for the position this time".
