The United States Embassy Ready to Cooperate with All Political Parties of Azerbaijan – Embassy’s Department Head

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / Fazil Gazanfaroglu, the chairman of the Great Establishment Party of Azerbaijan, accuses the Azadlig bloc with the party work for the United, Gazanfaroglu said to Trend agency.

Excluding Azadlig, sixteen Azerbaijan political parties signed an agreement on cooperation on 12 December. Gazanfaroglu believes that Azadlig did not join the agreement as the bloc does not function independently. Azadlig functions as per the orders of the United States.

"Azadlig which functions under the United States government has no right to meet and cooperate with others without permission of the National Democracy Institute of the Embassy," Gazanfaroglu stated.

The chairmen of the Classical Popular Front Party, Mirmahmud Miralioglu and Azadlig Party Ahmad Oruj said that Azadlig bloc depends upon the foreign forces and serve their interests. Azalea's co-chairman Ali Aliyev stated to Trend agency that the accusations against the bloc have no grounds. The bloc has no close relations with US Embassy and Government.

"Azadlig criticizes the double standards on the relation of the international structures and foreign states towards Azerbaijan. Seven or eight parties of Azerbaijan were involved in the protocol signed by the United States with the Azerbaijani political parties", Aliyev said. Aliyev said that the reason why the bloc did not join the agreement by sixteen parties was that the bloc considers hopeless unity among the parties.

Jonathan Henik, head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the USA Embassy stated to Trend agency that the United States embassy relates to Azadlig in someway as to any another political blocs and parties of Azerbaijan. The Embassy is ready to negotiate with all the political parties of Azerbaijan.

Azadlig bloc was created in the summer of 2005 by Azerbaijan's three main opposition parties: the Popular Front Party (PFPA), Musavat Party and Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA). The alliance's leaders are PFPA Chairman Ali Kerimli, Musavat Chairman Isa Gambar and DPA Chairman Rasul Guliyev. Azadlig is the main opposition political party, organizing frequent street demonstrations and suffering the brunt of police retaliation as a result.
