Azerbaijani Opposition Party to Change Political Course

Azerbaijan, Baku, 13 March / Trend corr. S.Ilhamgizi / The Open Society Party (OSP) of Azerbaijan will reject its previous policy and will introduce a new one, Akif Shahbazov, OSP chairman, stated to Trend .

The new political course of the party will be far from radical towards the Government and will reject previous methods of struggle. Shahbazov did not provide details of the party's new political course.

"We plan to work in a new direction as the previous one was unsuccessful. There will be a new approach which will promote positive results for the opposition. Presently, the conception of the course is being developed," Shahbazov said.

If Rasul Guliyev, OSP leader, accepts the changethen it will be approved during the meeting of the Supreme assembly. Shahbazov said the party will stick to the opposition towards the Government even after accepting the new political course.

Zamina Dunyamaliyeva, Advisor of the party, said she is in support of the opposition rejecting its radical policy and proposed this idea after the presidential elections in 2003.

DPA was founded by Jalaloglu in 1991. The party took a radical stance against the Government until 2007. In January 2007, the party took a new political course and improved relations with the authorities. Protesting against such an action Rasul Guliyev, the ex-chairman, and his supporters left the party and founded the Open Society party

For more than ten years, Guliyev has been living as an emigrant in the United States
