Azerbaijani Representative Elected Member of High Rank Expert Body on Human Rights of UN for First Time

Azerbaijan, Baku, 27 March / corr. Trend S. Agayeva/ The representative of Azerbaijan has been elected the member of the Advisory Committee of the Council on the Human Rights of UN.

Latif Huseynov, the head of the Legislation Department of the Azerbaijani Parliament and professor was elected the member of the Council during the vote in the meeting of the UN Council for three year term, Elchin Amirbayov, the head of the permanent representation of Azerbaijan at the Geneva branch of the UN said to Trend on 27 March.

Some 30 of 47 member states of the Council voted for Huseynov by the secret ballot while the opponents from Russia, Poland and Croatia polled 42, 14 and 7 votes respectively, the diplomat said.

So, the representative from Azerbaijan became one of the 18 first members of the Advisory Committee of the Council on the Human Rights of UN, Amirbayov said.

The Advisory Committee will serve as a key brain at the Council on the Human Rights of UN which aims at introducing the results of the analysis and study conducted by the experts on the various important issues in the field of human rights. The first meeting of the committee will be held on 4 to 15 August 2008 in Geneva.

According to Amirbayov, this is a very significant event as the representative of Azerbaijan has been elected the member of the high rank expert body of UN for the first time.
