Opposition Candidate for Presidential Post to Sign Agreement with Persons from ‘Shadow Cabinet’

Azerbaijan, Baku, 16 May / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / The candidate for the presidential post from the opposition Democratic party of Azerbaijan (DPA) is making efforts to form the support around him. "I held negotiations with about 15 well known persons and agreed with them almost all the important issues,' Sardar Jalaloglu, Chairman of DPA stated to Trend .

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008.

Isa Gambar, leader of Musavat party, Sardar Jalaloglu, chairman of Democratic party and Mais Gulaliyev, Chairman of the Green party of Azerbaijan have nominated their candidature to the presidential post. Eldar Namazov, a political scientist stated that he would participate in the elections as an independent candidate. The candidature of Ilham Aliyev will be nominated from the ruling New Azerbaijan party.

Jalaloglu said that he held negotiations with well known officials of other parties. "I will sign an agreement with only those who will accept my political points of view, and the position which I will propose them in case I win the elections. At the same time, I do not force them not to support their own parties and to support only me in the upcoming presidential elections. I told them to participate in the elections with their own candidate, but if I will win they would then accept my proposals. I will sign agreement with only those who will agree with my statement. The agreement will be signed with each person of my 'shadow cabinet'".

DPA was founded by Jalaloglu in 1991. The party took a radical position against the Government until 2007. In January 2007, the party took a new political course and improved relations with the authorities. Protesting against such an action Rasul Guliyev, the ex-chairman, and his supporters left the party and founded the Open Society party
