Azerbaijan, Baku, 23 May / Trend corr S. Agayeva/ Prague will host political consultations between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic. The consultations will take place on 23-24 May during the visit of Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov to Czechia, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the Czech Republic Tahir Tagizade reported to Trend in a telephonic conversation from Prague on 22 May.

Azimov is expected to meet with the Czech First Deputy Foreign Minister Tomas Pojar, Czechia's National Coordinator in the Visegradska Group Irzhi Chisitski and the Chairman of the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Jan Khomachek.

The main attention will be paid to development of political cooperation between the two countries.

"The prospects for bilateral and multilateral political cooperation will be considered. Azerbaijan and Czechia, as two countries to be presiding over the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM and the Visegradska Group respectively till the end of June, are ready to consider the opportunities for cooperation between the two organizations," Ambassador said.

"Visegradska Group has rich international experience and GUAM is interested in development of cooperation with the organization. On the other hand, Friendship Group of GUAM is being established in the European Union that was initiated by the President of Lithuania, and Czechia is very much interested in cooperation with GUAM," he said.

The Visegradska Group was founded in February 1991 to provide mutual help to its three members - Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia - while integrating into European and Euro-Atlantic structures. The Visegradska Group has now four members since the collapse of Czechoslovakia.

Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997, during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasburg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was taken to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM.
