Over 600kg Drugs to be Burned in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 12 June/ corr. Trend K. Zarbaliyeva/ The drugs over 600kgw, confiscated by the law enforcement agencies of Azerbaijan, will be burned.

The Commission to Fight against Drug Abuse and Illegal Turnover of Drugs will burn drugs confiscated last year on 24 June, on the eve of the Day of Fight against Drugs (usually marked on 26 June) in the Oil Machinery Building Plant.

The Commission said to Trend that hashish, marijuana and opium are dominating among the confiscated drugs.

The Ministry of National Security and Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan had confiscated majority of the drugs.

According to the Commission, the number of drug abusers officially registered in Azerbaijan has increased by 3,000 people, that is, the same figure made up 18,000 in 2007 and 21,800 people in 2008. 

The Commission, who is concerned about the rise in the drug abuse among the young, said that the drug- abuse is wide-spread in Astara, Lankaran, Salyan, Shirvan and Khachmaz regions.

The law enforcement agencies have confiscated over 181kg drugs in the first quarter of 2008.

Some 367 of 400 people, who were made answerable, are able-bodied people who are not employed or do not study, 101 - are earlier convicted, 7 - women and 1 - teenager.
