Army Day Celebrated in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku, 26 June / Trend / The 90th anniversary of the Azerbaijani Army is ceremonially being celebrated on 26 June. Military parade is being held with the regards to the anniversary at Azadlyg Square. Personnel of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, comprising of 4,510 people, is participating in the parade. At the same time, 210 units of modenized warlike equipment, 19 helicopters, 25 aircrafts, 31 ships and launches are brought to the parade.

Although Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), founded on 28 May 1918, existed only 23 months, a lot of significant work was carried out in the country. One of these works was a measure to organize Army. The issue of organizing Army was a difficult process. There was no national Army in Azerbaijan at the moment of the establishment of ADR. The state can not exist without Army, whilst the situation at this time was very strained. Neighbors of the country obviously expressed their intention to destroy the young Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and annex it to their country. From the first day, the Armenian National Government began to implement armed attempts to extend their territory at the expense of the Azerbaijani territory.

First military unit was organized by the decision of the ADR Government on 26 June 1918. This decision was a juridical base to organize the Army in the first democratic State in the Muslim East. After this decision, the Government signed a decree on military duty - call-up to army. Within short period, well-grounded results were obtained with regards to organization of the national army in Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani National Army could successfully prevent numerous attacks of the Armenian army.

On 9 October 1991, the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan Republic made a decision to organize Army.

In accordance with the decree of Azerbaijani President dated 22 May 1998, 26 June was declared as the Army Day.
