Police Criminalist Arrested with Charge of Blast at Vahhabi Mosque in   Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku, 21 August / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Criminalist of the Sabail District Police Department of Baku, the Azerbaijani capital was arrested with the charge of illegal arm storage.

Criminalist Ali Akhundov was arrested as a result of operations, which were held by employees of the Interior Ministry's Central Department to Enforce Organized Crime, the Sabail District Public Prosecutor's Office of Baku told Trend .

According to law enforcement bodies, illegal weapon and religious literature were found at the police employee's service office. The Sabail District Court brought Akhundov in jail sentence and criminal case was filed on this matter in line with Article 228 (illegal purchase, transfer, sale, storage, conveyance or carrying of firearms, components details of them, ammunition, explosive substances and facilities) of the Criminal Code.

Akhundov collected information about the blast, which took place at the Abu Bakr Mosque a while ago. The police employee belongs to Salafi sect.

Ehsan Zahidov, the Interior Ministry's spokesman, said that they did not have any information about Akhundov's arrest.

The blast took place at the Abu Bakir Mosque located in U.Bunyadzade Street of Baku city at 08.50PM on 17 August.

Unknown man threw two RGD-1 kinds of grenades into the Mosque, breaking the Mosque's window with stone.

According to the official data, two men died in this incident, whilst unofficial source urged it claimed lives of three men.

Emin Rasulov, a 22-year old resident of Astara Region, was arrested as a suspect. A criminal case was filed on him in line with Article 283.1 (instigation of national, racial or religious hostility) of the Criminal Code.

Investigation of this incident was commissioned to the Baku City Public Prosecutor's Office and criminal case was filed on this incident in accordance with Articles 120.2.4 (deliberate homicide through common dangerous method), 120.2.7 (deliberate homicide of two or more people) and 228 (illegal purchase, transfer, sale, storage, conveyance or carrying of firearms, components details of them, ammunition, explosive substances and facilities) of the Criminal Code.

Especially, people, who belong to Vahhabi sect, pray in the Abu Bakir Mosque. In 2008, the Azerbaijani National Security Ministry and the State Committee on Religious Organizations held operations in this Mosque and withdraw religious books, which were banned for spread.
