Problems with Border Defence Discussed in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku, 29 September /corr. Trend I.Alizade / The meeting of the working group of the International Conference on Border Affairs which took place in Baku on 29 September focused on the problems existing with regards to the defense of borders. "The territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was violated as a result of Armenia's occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani lands. Currently the Azerbaijani borders which lie under Armenian occupation remain without control," Chief of State Border Service of Azerbaijan, Lieutenant General Elchin Guliyev, said making a speech at the meeting. 

The meeting was attended y more than 50 representatives of Interpol, FRONTEX Agency, International Migration Organization, EU mission of assistance to Moldova and Ukraine in the sphere of border security. The meeting will be continuing till 30 September.   

According to Guliyev, the issues being discussed at the meeting are very urgent. "Many countries face illegal facts on the borders. Key goal of each state should be to defend borders. Today there are such problems as human trafficking, drug and arms contraband, illegal turnover," he added.

Guliyev said that Azerbaijan participates in such large-scale projects as Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, and this requires additional responsibility with regards to defense of country's borders.  

Military Adviser of Azerbaijan President, Lieutenant General Vahid Aliyev, said that the security and stability of Azerbaijan is one of the key directions of activity of State organizations.

According to him, the defense of borders is important in the international security. "All countries should combine efforts to combat such global problems as human trafficking, drug and arms contraband," Aliyev said.
