EU High Commissioner Arrives in Tbilisi

Georgia, Tbilisi, 30 September / corr Trend N.Kirtzkhalia / Javier Solana, the European Union (EU) high commissioner on security and foreign policy arrived in Tbilisi. He avoided any commentary in the airport, heading to a governmental house in Krtzanisi, where the headquarters for EU observers is located.

The EU observers are scheduled to set up monitoring of the so-called 'buffer zones' around the conflict regions in Georgia from 1 October.

Solana wishes personally to accompany 200 observers who are to replace the Russian military in these zones. The Russian military are committed to leave the buffer zone by 10 October.

In his residence Solana plans to hold meetings with Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili and other senior officials.

Later he will leave for Gori to meet with the suffered as a result of conflict, who are settled in the refugee camp.

During his stay in Tbilisi Solana will hold meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili at 18.00 [local hour] and gave a joint briefing at 19.00.

Afterwards, Solana will meet with the Georgian opposition at the Tbilisi Marriott hotel.
