Azerbaijani Media Insufficiently Cover Election Situation, Says Director of OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights

Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 October / Trend corr. D.Ibrahimova/ Janez Lenarčič, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, who is observing the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, said Azerbaijani media insufficiently covers the election situation and complained about composition of the election commissions.

"The impressions of the election activities were reflected in two prior reports. Our mission does not have any problems with access to polling stations," he said.

According to Lenarčič, the mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights will visit more than a half of the polling stations. "Now we cannot comment on the impressions of the elections," he said.

A while ago, head of the Azerbaijan Central Election Commission Mazahir Panahov called on TV channels to air from polling stations equipped with web cameras.

CEC urged journalists to apply to adequate bodies in case of violations.

Presidential elections take place in Azerbaijan today.

Seven candidates take part in the elections, including Ilham Aliyev, chairman of ruling New Azerbaijan Party; Igbal Agazade, chairman of opposition Umid (Hope) Party; Fazil Gazanfaroglu, chairman of Great Establishment Party; Gudrat Hasanguliyev, chairman of Unified Popular Front Party; Hafiz Hajiyev, chairman of Muasir Musavat Party; Fuad Aliyev, chairman of Liberal Democrat Party and independent candidate Gulamhuseyn Alibayli.
