Azerbaijan, Baku, 10 November / Trend , corr. A.Huseynbala/ The activity program of the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan for 2009 will be of the Azadlig bloc's program.
"Our main aim is to hold a referendum to make changes in the Constitution. We want to transform Azerbaijan into a parliamentary republic", Avaz Tamirkhan, the acting Chairman of the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan (LPA), which is united in the Azadlig bloc.
The opposition Liberal Party was established in 1995 under the leadership of Lala Shovkat. Currently, Shovkat is a co-founder and co-chair of an opposition political Azadlig bloc. In 2003, Hajiyeva resigned from the chairman post on the eve of presidential election. Avaz Tamirhan performs the chairmanship post of the party.
Lala Shovkat had been the state secretary from July 1993 to spring 1994.
According to Tamirhan, one of the pillars of the "Azadlig' bloc will be the restoration of the proportional system and an increase in the number of MPs. "We also want to make the application of a proportional system in the municipal election of 2009", Tamirhan added.
"Our main activity in 2009 will be the achievement of participation of local parties in municipal elections in combined form", Yagub Abbasov, the deputy chairman of the opposition Open Society party, told Trend .
OSP was founded in April 2007. Ex-speaker of Azerbaijani Parliament, Rasul Guliyev, was the leader of the opposition Open Society Party. From 2000 to the February of 2007 Guliyev was the chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA). Guliyev's supporters left DPA, held their congress and founded the Open Society Party.Despite OSP made a decision not to participate in the presidential election 2008, party supported the candidate from the governing New Azerbaijan party Ilham Aliyev.
According to Abbasov, a special attention will be paid to preparations to the parliamentary elections 2010.
"In accordance with the current political situation, we want to carry out serious activity in 2009, to reach prospects in the cooperation between opposition political movements. We supporter the opposition to perform with a general position to tackle national problems in the next year," Abbasov said.
Abbasov did not exclude that collaborative mass efforts are envisaged in the program activity for 2009. "The main task of OSP is to act in accordance with the developments in the region. The support of opposition parties to the Government to settle the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must take priority," Abbasov added.
