Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, 28 November / Trend corr. S.Kurbanov/ "Azerbaijan supported Turkmenistan's initiative on necessity to get guarantee from the United Nations (UN) on security of transnational pipelines," on 28 November Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov said at the end of a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is in the first official visit to Ashgabat.
"Speaking about international organizations, I would like to thank Ilham Aliyev for supporting us at initiative in security of transit (of hydrocarbon resources)," Berdimuhammedov told journalists at the end of negotiations.
Turkmenistan's proposal on special Convention on Guarantees of
security of international pipelines was discussed at the 63rd UN
General Assembly in New York in September 2008.
According to official Ashgabat, the UN can be a political and legal guarantor of construction of transcontinental energy arteries, safe and free transit of crude via main intergovernmental pipeline in the case of development of the relevant mechanism.
Importance of the convention is connected to construction project of Turkmenistan-Pakistan-India gas pipeline, which cost $6bln-7bln, expert said. in accordance with the plan, a route will run over Afghanistan, which has being experienced military conflict within several ten years.
