Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 6 / Trend , A.Huseynbala /An initiative group, established by the opposition Liberal Democratic party of Azerbaijan to restore the proportional election system, still continues the campaign on collection of signatures.
"The number of collected signatures has already exceeded 20,000. About 2,800 signatures were collected in the Nakhichivan Autonomous Republic (NAR) of Azerbaijan", head of the initiative group and deputy chairman of the Liberal Democratic party of Azerbaijan (LDPA) Vahid Nazarov said to Trend on Jan. 6.
Until 2002 the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan were implemented through the mixed system - majority and proportional. The referendum, carried out in 2002 in connection with constitutional reforms, canceled the proportional election system.
Some members of the governing New Azerbaijan party (NAP) supported restoration of the proportional election system.
In November 2008, LDPA created an initiative group on restoration of proportional election system. It unites 55 members. Group calls on behalf of LDPA all acting parties in Azerbaijan to join to the campaign on collection of signatures. The voices of approximately 600,000 voters will be collected in the case of support of political forces and to be represented to the Central Elections Commission (CEC). CEC in its turn will approve the document and will direct it to Parliament to restore the proportional election system.
According to Nazarov, the Citizen and
Development party takes an active participation in the campaign.
"A round table is expected to be held with attendance of NAP and opposition
parties to the end of January for this purpose," Nazarov said.
