An expert workshop on the January 20th tragedy was held at the Russian State Humanitarian University (RSHU) under the initiative of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Moscow.
The workshop was attended by Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuoglu, RSHU Rector Yefim Pivovar, members of the Russian academic community, political scientists, teachers and students.
Pivovar said the January 20th tragedy is a significant event in world history that must be studied from both a historical and moral point of view.
Bulbuloglu thanked the university's management and academics for supporting the initiative. He described the events that occurred 19 years ago and said the tragedy remains in the memory of the Azerbaijani people.
Bulbuloglu stressed that the tragedy has not lost its relevance today. The events that took place on Jan. 20, 1990 must be objectively assessed and understood, he said. It was a terrible tragedy for all Soviet peoples that resulted in the deaths of 158 civilians.
Bulbuloglu also said the Azerbaijani government does not identify the Soviet Union or Soviet army with Russia. He noted that discussing the tragedy was necessary to forge a common understanding of history so the appropriate lessons are learned - especially by younger generations.
Deputy Dean of the History Faculty at Moscow State University Alexei Vlasov, Director of the Center for Studying Post-Soviet Nations at Moscow State University Alexander Karavaev, Director of the Center for European Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences Alla Yazkova and others said the events were a tremendous tragedy for the Azerbaijani people.
