Russian president’s visit will strengthen relations: Uzbek Foreign Ministry

Russian President Dimitry Medvedev's visit to Uzbekistan will strengthen relations between the two countries and enhance ties between the Uzbek and Russian people, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

The presidents signed bilateral agreements on friendship, cooperation and strategic partnership. They also inked an agreement to improve economic cooperation between the two nations.

The program will run from 2008-2012.

Uzbekistan and Russia have signed 236 international agreements since 1991.

A key priority for Russian-Uzbek relations is joint projects in the energy sector, including hydrocarbon exploration and development in Uzbekistan and its transportation abroad.

The Russian and Uzbek diasporas are also contributing to the countries' continued development.

Roughly one million ethnic Russians live in Uzbekistan.

The Russian language is studied at 785 schools. There are 128 Russian-language schools.

Russian-language groups study at all universities in Uzbekistan.

Fifty books, 82 newspapers and 20 magazines are published in the country.

"Uzbekistan and Russia have achieved a high level of interaction and demonstrated stable development in all spheres. These relations are based on historical ties and traditional friendship between our two nations," the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.
