Turkmen president starts two-day visit to Iran: Foreign Ministry

Turkmen President Gyrbanguly Berdimyhamedov began a two-day visit to Iran today, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said.

"Our views on regional and international policy ensure productive relations between Turkmenistan and Iran," the Turkmen Dovlat Khabarlari news agency reported.

Turkmenistan and Iran support peaceful resolutions to disputes and establishing close international ties.

The trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Iran reached $2.972 billion in 2008 compared to $1.895 billion the previous year. Turkmenistan provides fuel and energy, textiles, chemicals, agricultural goods and food products to Iran. Iran exports engineering materials and chemicals, construction materials, electrical goods and food products to Turkmenistan. Iran was Turkmenistan's second largest foreign trade partner in 2008.

Turkmenistan and Iran have implemented a range of major projects, including the construction of the Dostluk Reservoir, Tedjen-Serakhs-Meshkhed Railway and Korpaca-Krtkui pipeline.

The Turkmen and Iranian presidents meet regularly.

Berdymuhamedov visited Tehran in June 2007.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Ashgabat in August 2007.

The two presidents later met at a summit in Tehran in October 2007.
