The Azerbaijani National Security Ministry prevented a large consignment of drugs from being smuggled into the country from Iran. The ministry seized over 50 kilograms of marijuana, the ministry told Trend on Feb. 13.
On Feb. 9, 2009, Astara residents Khosrov Nusratov, Elmaddin Hamdamov, Heydar Madatov, an Iranian citizen and other individuals smuggled the drugs from Iran into Azerbaijan.
The suspects agreed that Hamdadov would take the drugs to the Kijaba village in Astara where he would give them to Nusratov.
National Security Ministry employees detained Nusratov and Madatov in Lankaran while delivering the drugs to Masalli in a VAZ-2107.
A total of 50.171 gram of marijuana was found in the car.
A criminal case has been filed and an investigation launched into the incident.
