The European Union will not interfere in the investigation on assassination of the Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafiq Hariri, said Marc Otte, EU special representative for Middle East.
On Mar. 1, the special tribunal on Lebanon under the United Nations will begin investigation on the assassination of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon Rafiq Hariri, who was killed as a result of the act of terror in February 2005. The investigation will be carried out by Daniel Belmar, former Deputy Prosecutor General of Canada.
"EU supported the creation of special prosecutor and we will wait for his conclusion. But we think it is not proper for us to interfere to such a legal preceding," Otte told Trend .
Mainly the Syrian authorities are suspected of the assassination of the former Prime Minister, since Hariri spoke against the presence of the Syrian troops in Lebanon, located in the country since 1975.
He twice held the office of Prime Minister and became one of the greatest political leaders, killed over the last several years.
The establishment of special tribunal on Lebanon was approved by the UN Security Council in May 2007. Earlier the investigation on assassination was held by the international independent commission, headed Serge Brammertz, current Prosecutor of International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
