Azerbaijani president visits Iran

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad received his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev at the presidential palace, the IRNA news agency reported.

On March 10, Aliyev visited Iran to attend the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit. An Azerbaijani delegation is accompanying Aliyev on the visit.

Aliyev is the chairman of the ECO.

Ahmedinejad will assume the chairmanship at the summit in Tehran on March 11.

Turkey, Iran and Pakistan formed the ECO in 1985.

The ECO is an intergovernmental organization that aims to strengthen economic, technical and cultural cooperation among member-countries.

Azerbaijan joined the ECO in 1993. Central Asian countries joined the organization the same year.

The ECO unites Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
