Uzbek parliament ratifies agreement on state border with Tajikistan

Tashkent hosted the next meeting of the Uzbek parliament, the parliament told Trend . Speaker Dilorom Tashmuhammedova resided over the meeting.

At the meeting, parliamentarians examined a bill on "Ratifying Agreement between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on Uzbek-Tajik state border". International Affairs and Interparliamentary Relations Committee Deputy Chairman Latif Gulamov submitted the bill for examination. Gulamov is the chairman of the Uzbek National-Democratic Party fraction.

"The law was adopted after answering parliamentarians' questions and discussions," the parliament reported.

On Feb. 18 Dushanbe hosted the next meeting of the joint Uzbek-Tajik intergovernmental trade and economic cooperation commission and joint Uzbek-Tajik intergovernmental commission on delimitation and demarcation of the state border between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, the Uzbek government reported.

The meeting resided by Uzbek First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Azimov and Tajik Deputy Foreign Minister Murodali Alimardon focused on discussions of topical issues to develop bilateral relations and issues of both countries' interests.

As a result, protocols were inked on trade-economic cooperation, as well as demarcation and delimitation of state borders between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received the head of the Uzbek delegation on the same day.

Length of the Uzbek-Tajik border is 1,161 kilometers, the Uzbek National Security Service Committee on State Border Protection told Trend . Over 80 percent of borders pass over hard-to-rich highlands.
