Azerbaijani authorities take gross efforts to enable citizens to make right choice at referendum: PACE watchdog

Azerbaijan, Baku, March 17 / Trend , N.Abdullayeva/

The Azerbaijani authorities have made great efforts to allow the people to understand the significance of the referendum on amending the country's Constitution and to make the right choice, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) UK member Mike Hancock told Trend on March 17.

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend 29 articles of the Constitution.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

"I also think it is perfect for Azerbaijan for its people to make decisions themselves. The referendum, which starts now, is based on solid foundations and is legally correct," Hancock said.

"The preparations for the referendum have been done correctly. We did not find any violations," he said.

"It will be important for all to go well tomorrow, and I think it will," Hancock added.

The Central Election Commission has registered the New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy, Civil Society, For Sustainable Development, Intellect, Movement for Karabakh and Republic and Republicans referendum initiative groups. The Prosperous Village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence groups were denied registration.
