Despite external threat, Georgia to partake operation in Afghanistan: Defence Minister

"Despite the external threats to security Georgia stands ready to continue to contribute to global security and to send troops to Afghanistan," Defense Minister of Georgia David Sikharulidze said at a summit of defense ministers at NATO headquarters.

He partook in a meeting of Alliance 28 countries - member defense ministers and 21 partner countries in Brussels.

"I'm proud to note that more than 10,000 Georgian military participated in peacekeeping operations since 1999," the minister said.

Sikharulidze said that Afghanistan "is of great importance to security and stability." "Georgian troops will be sent to Afghanistan this fall," he said.

Georgia will send to the French sector of responsibilities its company. Talks are holding on sending another contingent of the United States armed forces in Afghanistan.
