Civil society' role in Azerbaijan's parliamentary elections discussed

The civil society must become more active in matters of parliamentary elections, Senior Fellow at the Azerbaijani Presidential Center for Strategic Research (CSR) Tahira Allahyarova said at the roundtable on "Role of Civil Society in the parliamentary elections" held in the Azerbaijani media. Allahyarova drew attention to the fact that representatives of civil society lag this time compared to the previous parliamentary elections. The civil society has launched activities since April during the last parliamentary elections.

The parliamentary elections will be held in Baku this autumn. Previous legislative elections were held in November 2005. In Azerbaijan, the parliamentary elections are held by the majority system in 125 electoral districts.

The participants of the event noted the importance of not only more active civil society, but also the possible contribution of non-governmental organizations in the creation of a free and fair atmosphere for the elections.

The roundtable announced about holding of even more significant event on the theme of civil society and elections, with the support of the State Support to NGOs Council under the Azerbaijani President in the near future. It was noted that NGOs should come to this event with specific proposals.
