New UNDP initiatives will be announced in the Georgian parliament today. The meeting will be attended by Parliamentary Speaker David Bakradze and UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia Jamie McGoldrick.

The initiatives aim to support parliament in representation, developing laws, supervising the executive branch, and identifying key policy areas.

The program will facilitate parliament's effective, systematic participation in the annual budget cycle, while developing appropriate legislation for democratic local governance and improving human resources management.

The program also supports parliament's cooperation with legislative bodies in the Baltic states, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.

The technical and expert assistance program will continue until late 2011. The project budget is $270,000, and will increase to $900,000. Cooperation between the UNDP and parliament began in 2004.
