Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 25 / Trend M.Aliyev /

Absence of a U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan does not affect the relations between the two countries, Presidential Administration Social and Political Department head Ali Hasanov told journalists on today. "Staff of the American diplomatic mission in the country performs the ambassador's functions," he said.

"But, according to the international practice, the state can not remain without an ambassador over a year. We therefore hope that the U.S. will appoint an ambassador to Azerbaijan in this interim period," Hasanov said.

The post of U.S. Ambassador in Baku has been vacant since the previous ambassador, Anne Derse, left it due to completion of her diplomatic mission, in July 2009.
