Georgia's new constitution was not written under concrete, that is under me, said today the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, while visiting Holiday Inn Hotel to be opened on Oct. 23 in Tbilisi.
He briefed journalists on the message by the secretary general of Venice Commission Thomas Markert, which states that after a detailed analysis, the Commission expresses "full compliance" of the new Constitution of Georgia with the European traditions.
Saakashvili thanked the MPs that they waited for the final conclusion of the VC and only after that adopted the Constitution. "Now our opponents have nothing to say, the Speaker David Bakradze and the MPs acted correctly that waited for this decision, because even though it was not necessary, but it is good," he said.
Saakashvili noted that he was against limiting the president's authorities, but "the version that is accepted is better for the country." "This option increases the powers of the government and prime minister, but at my urgent request, the president's powers still remain and it will not be the British Queen, although if the constitution would be written under me, I would have, on the contrary, to go through enhancing powers of prime minister," he said.
The President of Georgia underlined that the only remark of VC is the preservation of a strong president who, however, is deprived of forming a government and appoint prime minister. "This constitution severely complicates the life and work of the prime minister and government, but today it is the best version of the constitution for the country," he said.
He said that in adopting the Constitution were taken into account all the claims, and now the opposition should give the government time for calm development of country.
