Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman Mazahir Panahov regards withdrawal of nominations by some candidates during the parliamentary elections as a normal process.

"Steps taken by the political parties serve their plans. There is a common tradition in the world when certain candidates withdraw their candidacy in the electoral marathon," Panahov said on Thursday.

To date, the CEC has registered 741 candidates, of whom 53 persons withdrew their nominations. 688 candidates intend to participate in the parliamentary elections in 2010.

"Any candidate assesses his/her achievements on this path. In some cases, the results of this calculation make the candidate decide to withdraw his candidacy," Panahov said.

The elections are scheduled for Nov. 7. Previous elections were held in November 2005. The elections are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.
