Georgian and Estonian military discuss participation in int'l peacekeeping missions

Major-General Devi Chankotadze, the head of the Joint Staff of Georgian Armed Forces, met with the commander of self-defense forces of Estonia, Lieutenant-General Ants Laaneots.

The Georgian Defense Ministry told Trend that the sides discussed the issues related to military training, the effective implementation of peacekeeping missions and reforms in the defense sector of Georgia.

Laaneots attended the first artillery brigade. Chankotadze said after examining the base that Georgia and Estonia cooperate in the defense sector for a long time. "The main part of the Georgian-Estonian projects is to train highly qualified military personnel and effective management of peacekeeping missions. We discussed these priority issues at the meetings," the head of the Joint Staff told media.

"For the first time I visited Georgia in June 2008. Afterwards, Georgia greatly changed both in the civilian sector and infrastructure. During the meeting, we shared our opinions on the areas of military construction. We also shared information about participation in ISAF. The Estonian and Georgian troops serve in a very dangerous region of [Afghanistan] in the province Hermand, " Laaneots said.

This morning, the Estonian delegation laid wreaths at the memorial to those died for the territorial integrity of Georgia.

During the visit Laaneots also met with the head of the intelligence service - Gela Bezhuashvili. He plans to meet with Deputy Defense Minister Nodar Harchiladze.

The Estonian delegation will complete the visit on December 4.
