Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, Dec. 11 /Trend, H.Hasanov/
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov on Saturday has addressed an international conference marking the 15th anniversary of adoption of positive neutrality status of Turkmenistan in Ashgabat, Turkmen official source says.
According to the source, Mammadyarov noted that Azerbaijan was among those who had supported this initiative of Turkmenistan in 1995.
"Azerbaijan co-sponsored a special resolution adopted by the UN. We knew that this was a voluntary choice of our neighbors, our fraternal Turkmenistan. Congratulations on this wonderful date," he said.
He also noted that during a Saturday meeting with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov he had congratulated the Turkmen leader "on remarkable success."
December 12, 1995 at a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York all of 185 member countries voted to adopt a special resolution on the permanent neutrality of Turkmenistan. A few days later, a Constitutional Law was adopted in Turkmenistan giving domestic status to the UN decision. December 12 was established as a public holiday.
In turn, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Rashid Meredov, who chaired the conference session, stressed that "Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are developing energy cooperation," adding that bilateral relations have come "to a new level of interaction."
