Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 13 / Trend N. Kirtskhalia /
By introducing additional taxes, the Georgian authorities are provoking a popular uprising, former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze said.
He made the statement while commenting on the recently increased water tariffs and transport fares.
"Such ill-considered decisions will lead not just to disorder, but to a revolution, as the already impoverished people will come out," Shevardnadze said today in an interview with the Asaval-Dasavali newspaper.
Shevardnadze believes that people "simply cannot stand" further price hikes on food and transport.
"People are ready to come out onto the streets," he said.
The Georgian opposition said earlier that mass rallies will be held this spring to urge the ouster of Saakashvili.
